David Stein

David Stein was born in New York City in 1948. He was raised in Washington, D.C. and attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Stein graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in Homebuilding. In 1970 he joined ITT Levitt and Sons, at that time the largest homebuilding company in the world. At the age of 22, Mr. Stein became the youngest Project Manager in the history of the company. After attaining the position of Regional Manager for Washington, D.C., and Virginia, he left Levitt and joined the nation?s largest planned-community developer, Avco Community Developers, Inc. After becoming the General Manager for Avco?s Los Angeles, Orange County and Texas Divisions, Mr. Stein left Avco and created his own land development and homebuilding company, The Stein Group. In 1979, he merged with The Brief Corporation to form The Stein-Brief Group. Under Mr. Stein?s presidency, the company became one of California?s leading building and development companies, specializing in resort communities. In 1982, Stein began the development of Monarch Beach, California, a billion dollar resort community. Monarch Beach is comprised of a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Links Golf Course, a Racquet Club, a Beach Club, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel and a St. Regis Resort Hotel, office space, retail shops and 2,750 homes. In 1989, upon completion of Monarch Beach, Mr. Stein established The Stein Group in Europe. With Mr. Jordi Robinat, Mr. Stein created MedGroup, a Spanish Real Estate company that was partnered with George Soros in Spain. Mr. Stein was President of MedGroup until 1999 when he left in order to focus The Stein Group?s efforts upon the development and operation of a group of small-luxury hotels to be located in the Northern Mediterranean and in selected European capitals. The company develops, owns and operates Gran Hotel Son Net, a Relais & Chateaux located in Mallorca, Spain, and the Durley House Hotel located on Sloane Street in London. In April 2003, it opened luxury Gran Hotel La Florida in Barcelona and is currently developing another luxury hotel in that city: the Gran Hotel Miramar. The Stein Group has also acquired Blakes Hotel in Amsterdam and most recently, Chateau Eza in the Cote d?Azur. During the course of his business career, Mr. Stein has served as the Chairman of the Pacific National Bank in California and has been involved in the production of feature films and television programming. He is also the founding Chairman of Claremont Graduate University?s School of Economics and Politics in California and Projecte Jove, the first drug treatment and prevention program for adolescents in Spain. Since 1994, Mr. Stein has served as President of The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C.
