Alfonso Vegara (President) is an architect-planner, and has other degrees in economics and sociology. He obtained his doctorate in architecture and urban planning from the University of Navarre. He was Professor of Urban Planning at several universities in Spain, and was Visiting Professor of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania between 1997 and 2002. He is also President of the Madrid-based Taller de Ideas, founded in 1987, and has directed many planning projects, many of which have been published and has won a number of important prizes. He has spoken at numerous conferences around the world, and has advised different cities. In 2002, he was elected President of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), a global association of professional planners with members from seventy countries.
